Upon hearing the utterance of the word “Fargo,” most immediately think of the 1996 Academy-award winning film named after North Dakota’s most populous city. While the Coen Brothers’ acclaimed film was certainly entitled to all the acclaim it received, Fargo proper definitely deserves some love too.
Home to North Dakota State University, Fargo is named in honor of Wells Fargo founder William Fargo (1818-1881). A politically diverse and economically thriving metropolitan area, Fargo’s low crime and unemployment rates, coupled with its affordable housing, make it one of America’s most liveable cities. Lest we forget about Fargo’s cultural offerings, the city is home to the Fargo-Moorhead Opera, the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, and the 1926 Art Deco Fargo Theatre.
Additionally, The Plains Art Museum, centrally located within the city’s borders, houses the largest collection of regional and national pieces in the state. In its entirety, Fargo has come a long way from its mid-19th century roots; proving to be the educational and industrial heart of the Peace Garden State.
